Let’s say you love the family business Jones & Jones Buckets. They make the best buckets and more importantly they love doing it and make you feel all warm and buckety every time you go in. Ahh Buckets *sigh*
You think to yourself… ‘How can I help the wonderful family business that is Jones & Jones Buckets? They deserve some recognition for years of Bucketing greatness.’ Well as long as there are two or more family members playing an active role in the business then you can nominate them for a Cumbria Family Business Award! You simply fill in the form here, putting down just why they are the best Bucketeers in town and what makes them special. Then one of our team (probably Soph) will contact them personally to let them know the good news, we normally like to tell them what the kind person has said about them but we won’t share your name if you don’t want us to. At this point Jones & Jones Buckets have a decision to make, they can either pour themselves an extra large gin and bask in the warm glow of appreciation and that’s the end of that, or they can decide to enter formally to be in with a chance of an award. If they choose to go for it then Jones & Jones Buckets would then submit their application form and then it would be over to the judges to decide their fate. Remember though that your nomination could still make all the difference though as judges do take them into consideration when making their decisions.
Who is your favourite butcher, baker, wellington boot maker, shop, cafe, restaurant, solicitors, B&B, garden centre, artist, training company, accountants, designer, cottage company, boss, hat maker, or of course bucket shop? Make someone’s day and share the love, it only takes a minute but it could make all the difference.

We couldn’t do this without them!
Family businesses thinking of applying for the Cumbria Family Business Awards are being offered free workshops to support them with the application process. Two workshops are being held in November which aim to talk family businesses through how to write stronger awards applications. The workshops are being run by Cumbria Family Business Awards creators and organisers; the PR, events and social media experts Flock and The Family Business Network Ltd. The two hour long free workshops run from 10am – 12pm and light refreshments are included. Spaces are limited and can be reserved below.
Sophia Newton Co-Director of Flock explains the reasons behind the workshops:
“One of the things we love about the Cumbria Family Business Awards is its ability to attract family businesses of all sizes and ages to apply. However, with nearly 90% of businesses in the county being family run we know there are some family businesses out there who aren’t confident enough to tackle an awards application and so don’t enter at all. During the session we hope to demystify awards application forms and give people the confidence to apply not just to the Cumbria Family Business Awards but to any industry relevant award”
2017 winners PHX Training and finalists FMB have kindly allowed their premises to be used for the workshops and provided the refreshments.

- Food and Drink Establishments
- Agriculture, Forestry and Farming
- Property and Construction
- Retailers and Wholesaler
- Large Hotels, Leisure and Tourism
- Small Hotels, Leisure and Tourism
- Food and Drink Producers
- Professional and Business Services
- Transport and Logistics
- Creative Business
- Employee of the Year
People are also being encouraged to nominate their favourite family-run businesses. The nominated business still has to apply formally but the judges do take nominations into consideration when making their decisions so they could make all the difference.
Sue Howorth of The Family Business Network Ltd is one of the event organisers and explained the importance of nominations to family run businesses
So often family business owners are modest about themselves and their achievements. In 2017 we had winning families who would never have applied had it not been for the nomination they received. For us the nominations help us reach businesses that wouldn’t normally apply for awards or just don’t realise how important they are, whether that be to their customers, staff or their community.
Applications and nominations can be made here. Judges will then choose their finalists before meeting them in a round of live interviews. Winners will be announced on the 9th March at the Awards Ceremony at The Garden at Eden Carlisle.

Our own Janett Walker visited the E3 Awards held at the Macron Stadium in Bolton as a guest of #CFBA2017 sponsors Federation of Small Business. Janett was delighted to see a strong Cumbrian contingent and even happier when awards were picked up! Nanny Brow who had been finalists in the very hotly contested Small Leisure and Tourism Category at #CFBA2017 won the Best Family Business Category. Joanne Hunter the fifth-generation business owner of Grasmere Gingerbread, who was a finalist in the #CFBA2017 Food and Drink Producer category was awarded the surprise Special Achievement accolade. Even one of our event sponsors Net* were winners, given the Corporate Social Responsibility Award. Truly a great night for all Cumbria and especially lovely to see Cumbrian family businesses recognised over the border! CONGRATULATIONS ONE AND ALL from all the #CFBA2017 and #CFBA2018 Team. #WeAreCumbria!
The Cumbria Family Business Awards 2018 #CFBA2018 will be officially launched at The Family Business Conference at The Halston Carlisle on Thursday 19th October 2017. Overall 2017 winners Bells of Lazonby will be there to talk about the impact of winning Outstanding Cumbrian Family Business of The Year. The first awards for family businesses in Cumbria were held on Friday 10th March 2017, sponsored by Lamont Pridmore in association with Enterprise Answers. Twelve glittering hand-crafted awards were given out on the night which was hosted by Cumbrian half of the Hairy Bikers Dave Myers.
Jo Vincent Kendal glass artist created the main awards which formed a Cumbrian mountain range and were divided into individual slices of the landscape. Winners were each presented with their artisan award, with some choosing to take them up mountains to show them off even more! Two additional ceramic awards were designed and made by ceramic artist Siobhan Newton of Miles Moore Clay. Created to reward the two top prizes Employee of the Year and Outstanding Cumbria Family Business of the Year.
The Cumbria Family Business Awards 2018 will take place on Friday 9th March (venue still being kept top secret!) and organisers promise an even bigger and better event than the nationally trending #CFBA2017. You can keep up to date with the awards on Facebook and Twitter. Winners from 2017 can not enter next year’s, so it’s all to play for at #CFBA2018.

These wonderful wonderful family businesses all made it through to the finals of the national Family Business of the Year Awards. Zeffirellis & Fellinis, Sally’s Cottages, PHX Training, Grasmere Gingerbread, Bells of Lazonby, The Churchmouse at Barbon, GM & SM Marrs, Wm Armstrong, Lakes Cottage Holidays, Reays Coaches, JMP Foodservices, Hawkshead Relish and JB Banks of Cockermouth. That’s a bakers dozen of brilliant businesses all representing our wonderful county on a national stage! The ceremony took place on Thursday 8th June (which turned out to be was a pretty important date for us all!) and THREE of our blooming marvellous Cumbrian family business finalists WON! From the bottom of our hearts a huge congratulations to the winners, and a big well done to all the finalists who made it to the nationals. The competition was seriously stiff with household names like Walkers Shortbread and Thatchers Cider in the running, to be included in the same field as such institutions is truly excellent and you should all be very proud – we certainly are!
Wm Armstrong were crowned the best family run Transport & Logistics business in the country and were also runners-up as overall winners which went to Manchester’s HMG Paints. In a hotly contested category The Churchmouse at Barbon were recognised as the nations best Hotel & Leisure family business and Hawkshead Relish picked up the gong for the country’s best Small Family Business.
We sent Sue down to represent the #CFBA team and show our support for all you there, Sue also sponsored the North category of the national awards and was one of the judges.
“It was a fantastic evening and lovely to see such strong Cumbrian representation, the North category had the highest applications of any region. We were absolutely delighted to see thirteen of our finalists representing the county on a national stage. For three of them to pick up awards is fantastic news for them and the vitally important family business sector as a whole. It also showed that the Cumbria Family Business Awards have done their job of cementing our regions businesses on a national stage. – Go Cumbria, we’re with you all the way!”
Sophia, Sue and Janett speak about that night!
We are still reeling from the glittering night that was the first Cumbria Family Business Awards, the response from the business community has been astonishing and so far as evening’s go, it was a pretty special one. We worked so hard on all the little details that we hoped would make your night even more magical, music, artworks, books and awards designed by the county’s finest artists, not to mention the delightful family business drinks reception. Everything (more or less) went exactly to plan, what we couldn’t have predicted was the atmosphere. The room was simply buzzing and that was down to the people who attended. We would also like to extend our thanks to the wonderful Dave Myers who hosted the night in his inimitable style and was a true gentlemen. Dave genuinely cared about the premise for the night and took time to speak with people until long after the ceremony had finished. We weren’t the only ones who enjoyed themselves and here are just some of the lovely things people had to say about the night!
The event was superbly organised, the attention to detail was beautiful, but my overriding memory will be the feeling of warmth, joy and sense of community, now that really is hard to achieve! – Sarah Stables University of Cumbria
I just wanted to say a great big thank you for Friday night. You ladies were awesome! Everything went completely fabulously, right down to the music played to accompany the winners on stage (you could tell it was organised by women!) The night was totally buzzing!…I’ve still got an enormous smile on my face! Thank you so much. – Sally Fielding, Sally’s Cottages
Lovely emails, handwritten letters and much more have flooded our inboxes and doormats this week. THANK YOU! Thank you to all the fantastic family business finalists, winners, judges, sponsors, guests, artists, authors, musicians, production team, photographers, videographers and everyone involved in the first of many Cumbria Family Business Awards. #WeAreCumbria! Let’s make sure we get #CFBA2018 trending next year too! Family businesses of Cumbria – you deserve it!
Lakeland Chauffeurs will be picking Hairy Biker Dave Myers up in good time today to bring him to the Cumbria Family Business Awards. He will be collected from a secret location and brought to the Castle Green Hotel ready to rehearse tonight’s ceremony with Janett, Sue and Sophia.
“Lakeland Chauffeurs are delighted to be providing the transport for the world famous local celebrity Mr Dave Myers, when he presents the prestigious awards at the Cumbria Family Business Awards Ceremony 2017. He will arrive in our executive transport vehicle, the Range Rover Sport black edition, driven by chauffeuse Hilary Hutchinson.”
They will then return him to his celebrity hideout (?!) once the evening is complete. Lakeland Chauffeurs have kindly laid on one of their executive cars for the occasion and will be treating their celebrity guest with the same care and attention they pay to every passenger. Based in South Lakes but covering all Cumbria and beyond they have a reputation as a reliable, polite and well-presented fleet, winning the Sheila Hensman Cumbria Tourism Award in 2016. Their chauffeurs and chauffeuse also bring their own Cumbrian charm to every trip and we are delighted to have them onboard! Thank you Lakeland Chauffeurs for supporting the first Cumbria Family Business Awards. #CFBA2017 #WeAreCumbria

The awards trophies have been created by Jo Vincent. Designed to reflect the intimate relationship between family businesses and Cumbria. Cumbria is more than a landscape, businesses and communities all contribute to our county to make part of a whole; and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Jo’s work focuses on her engagement with the Cumbrian landscape, permanent geological formations above and under the ground as well as temporary shifts in the landscape caused by seasons, tides and weather. The awards have been created using a variety of kiln formed glass techniques with many of the pieces spending many days in the kiln due to their irregular thickness and textures created in the glass. Each is unique rather like the lucky family business who receives them.
Beyond the celebrations on the night it’s key that family businesses truly benefit from their winning status. Thankfully Windermere Lakes Cruises also understand the importance of making the most of the moment and has kindly sponsored a spring evening cruise on Windermere for the Winners, Judges, Sponsors, Organisers and Press. Windermere Lakes Cruises has a deep relationship with Cumbria and the Lake District. Their iconic boats are now part of the landscape on Windermere and the company works hard to forge links not just with tourists but other Cumbrian businesses.
We recognise that Cumbria is more than a landscape and that local business is as important to the success of Cumbria as the natural beauty. We all have our part to play to ensure Cumbria remains an exciting and inviting place to live, work and visit. The Cumbria Family Business Awards are a great initiative, we are delighted to be hosting the Winners’ Cruise on Windermere. – Nigel Wilkinson
The evening will be a moment to reflect on their family businesses success but also to make new contacts, get additional press coverage, give and receive feedback and talk about their Awards journey. The organisers Sophia, Janett and Sue will also be revealing the winners’ involvement in the next step of the Cumbria Family Business Awards journey.
