Four free workshops have been announced to support family businesses thinking of applying for the Cumbria Family Business Awards 2019. Open to all family businesses, the free sessions will be taking place in the North, South, East and West of the county. Hosted by previous finalists and sponsors and winners the workshops will be run by the dynamic event organisers; Sue Howorth of The Family Business Network ,and Sophia Newton and Janett Walker co-founders of PR and events company Flock. Trialed for the first time last year, the workshops worked wonders for the attendees, many of whom went on the become finalists and winners.
Sue Howorth explains “Working through the application point by point and showing people how to approach an application really helps applicants, not just with these awards but others too. Perhaps most importantly of all it gives businesses the confidence to enter by encouraging them to share their own unique story. Especially those who might not normally apply for awards or don’t have their own marketing team.”
The awards open for applications at midnight on Thursday 11th October following The Family Business Conference 2018. The application closing date is midnight Thursday 17th January. Family businesses thinking of applying are encouraged to book their free space at one of the following workshops.

Thurs 27 Sept JF Hornby & Co (Ulverston)
Tues 6 Nov Trade Copiers (Carlisle)

After attending the application workshop last year they went on to win the Professional & Business Services category which was sponsored by Business Doctors.Since then, Elton Finance Ltd have also won the CN Business Boost competition and Samantha is also a finalist in the Enterprise Vision Awards too.
“The workshop helped us so much, clarifying our thoughts and encouraging us to include more personality in the form. We would have kept it much more business like if we hadn’t been, but we got the confidence to include more of our personal story and I think this is what has made the difference not just for CFBA but for all our awards applications. I would definitely encourage any family business thinking of applying to go for it, we were a real underdog in our category, but we won and haven’t looked back since!”
The Cumbria Family Business Awards 2019 take place on Friday 8th March at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa on the shores of Windermere. Main sponsors for the event are Lamont Pridmore and Enterprise Answers amongst many other well-respected businesses. The sparkling ceremony will be hosted by the TV celebrity Hairy Bikers duo, Si King and Dave Myers.
Foodie TV presenters Si King and Dave Myers, better known as The Hairy Bikers have both been confirmed as the co-hosts of the Cumbria Family Business Awards 2019. Cumbrian Dave Myers hosted the first ceremony in 2017 and was due to reprise his role in 2018 when ill health prevented him from appearing. Thankfully his friend and co-presenter Si King stepped in. The dynamic duo, known for their humour and down to earth nature will be hosting the ceremony together on Friday 8th March 2019 at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa, Windermere.
Janett Walker of Flock PR and Events explains why they have chosen the charismatic pair:
“Separately, both have been superb hosts; funny, warm and bringing a real sense of occasion to the night. Si King and Dave Myers both love this area and have a real passion for family run businesses, especially the foodie ones! They have both spoken to us about how much they enjoyed being a part of the Cumbria Family Business Awards, saying it’s not like any others they’ve been too. It was an easy decision to ask them to return together and we are really looking forward to welcoming them back.”
On arrival, The Hairy Bikers will be greeted by Cumbrian family business Hawkshead Relish, whose founders Maria and Mark Whitehead will also be hosting them throughout the evening.
