Miles-Moore Ceramics use Cumbrian rainwater in artworks for Cumbria Family Business Awards

If you can’t remember meeting Siobhan, you haven’t met Siobhan. A glowing pillar of energy, enthusiasm and knowledge she is truly a delight to work with. We are really proud of the creative elements of the Awards ceremony and as well as the stunning glass awards created by glass artist and designer Jo Vincent, we are also lucky enough to have Siobhan Newton of Miles-Moore Ceramics creating two additional awards for the two star prizes!

Both pieces are handbuilt using white grogged stoneware clay. The decorative finish is achieved by blending together three iconic Cumbrian materials, Egremont Haematite, Coniston Slate and Shap Granite and in fact a fourth…Cumbria rainwater! A colour shifting paint finish unique to Miles-Moore Ceramics is then used to give the pieces their final lustre. The finished pieces tell the story of Cumbria’s industrial history from subsistence agriculture based on our amazing landscape, exporting the stone and metal that is hidden beneath it, through to the innovation and high tech industry that comes from networking family business together in this unique corner of the world.

We won’t tell you any more as we’ll save the finer details for the big night, but safe to say that whoever receives these stunning artworks on the night are truly in for a treat. Thank you to Siobhan Newton whose lust for life has given the awards even more sparkle than before!

Daniel Cooper artwork to be showcased at Awards thanks to FMB

Acclaimed artist Daniel Cooper responds with highly emotional expressions to the sublime weather in the Lake District and wider Cumbrian landscape.  Some of his most iconic artworks will add yet another creative element to the Cumbria Family Business Awards thanks to sponsorship from Kendal based financial advisors FMB.  Director Ruth Power has long been a supporter of both business and arts in Cumbria.

Using charcoal and mixed media in his original works, Cooper observes reality imaginatively, and aims to communicate the ever changing moods of the land and skies through his work. Daniel has held many acclaimed solo-exhibitions across Cumbria, and as Sophia has worked with Daniel on a variety of exhibitions and shows she was keen to involve him in the Awards. He is represented in prestigious galleries in the UK and Miami, and Daniel’s work is considered some of the most collectable contemporary work being made in Cumbria today with a number of celebrity buyers among his many collectors. His next exhibition Land Marks opens on 1st April at The Beach Hut Gallery. We won’t disclose any more for now as we don’t want to give away all our secrets but Daniel will be attending on the night and is cetainly worth seeking out, in the meantime you can find out more information about Daniel on his website. Reays Coaches is a family business, founded in 1985. The head office and main depot is located in Wigton Cumbria, Reays also have a travel shop in Carlisle city centre and a small depot and office at both Egremont and Penrith.

Reays provide a number of services to the local community as well as businesses. The business initially began operating an eight-seat mini bus service in Fletchertown near Wigton, in 1985. Walter Reay died of leukaemia in 1995, by which time his son Chris had taken charge, aged 19. Nearly forty years on the company now has around ninety vehicles. The company employs around one hundred and fort-five people.

Reays provide day trips, UK and European holidays, theatre and concert trips. As well as this they provide several service buses and private hires. They also provide private hires to both the public and businesses.

Heaton Cooper, Lakes Cottage Holidays, Nanny Brow and Sally’s Cottages are finalists of Cumbria Family Business Awards

Tourism plays such an integral role in Cumbria’s economy it’s no surprise that the quality of applications for the Small Leisure and Tourism Business sector was so high This competitive category sponsored by Coulson Associates Ltd has four wonderful finalists, and you can learn more about them all here…

The Heaton Cooper Studio in Grasmere, was opened by William Heaton Cooper in 1938, but the business was started on another site by his father, Alfred, in 1905.

A prominent and significant feature of Cumbria’s cultural heritage, it includes work by the Heaton Cooper family and guest artists, with the Lakeland landscape at the heart of displays. The Heaton Cooper family tree is a pictorial essay on development of art in the Lakes, with 10 artists represented, including sculptor Ophelia Gordon Bell, and Julian Cooper, (son of William Heaton Cooper and Ophelia) the internationally known painter of mountain landscapes. The most well-known works are by Alfred and William, capturing the magnificence and beauty of rock and fell, stream and lake. The current director of the studio, Rebecca, the grand-daughter of William, is also an artist. She works alongside her uncle, Julian, and father, John, who is the former director.


We are a dedicated and passionate family who want to promote our county to others. We now have over 400 cottages in Cumbria to offer our holidaymakers. We want other families to make special memories here whilst on holiday just like we have. We cater for all budgets and are always ready to go that extra mile. Nanny Brow was awarded a CBEN gold award for environmental sensitivity in renovation and operation, and recognition of their five-star gold status by the AA for three years running, plus inclusion in the Michelin and Good Hotel guides.  In 2015, Emma Robinson was nominated for ‘Front of House Manager of the Year’ at the ‘Boutique Hotelier Personal Service Star Awards’.  In 2016, Nanny Brow was named in the top 20 North West Hotels by ‘Trivago’, was a finalist in the ‘Family Business of the Year’ awards and won Cumbria’s ‘Best Luxury Boutique Hotel 2016’ at the Hotel and Spa awards.


Sally’s Cottages has grown from humble beginnings.  In fact, Sally started out life in the tourism business cleaning toilets on her parents’ farm campsite.  Her husband, Rob, had a slightly different line of work in building stone walls and digging graves.  Together they have grown Sally’s Cottages from holiday letting a single cottage in Eskdale, to letting over 400 cottages today.  It is a business that took only £1,000 to set up, over 13 years ago to one that took bookings worth over £5.7 million last year.  It is a business that sells dreams and moments of happiness, and relies on a core team of fabulous people to do so – the business owns nothing except for a few computers and desks, visitors buy nothing but the chance to stay for a few days in (what we think is) the most beautiful part of the UK.  At the end of their stay they have nothing to take back from Sally’s Cottages except memories to keep them going til the next time…

Although very young, this new family business has all the hallmarks of future success. A great exemplar of seeing an opportunity, having a passion, having a family prepared to work hard together to get this new venture off the ground. They even have “Grandparents cutting front hedge, serving, waiting on, washing pots”
 Whilst a young business, they really go the extra mile and their attention to customer service has led to a dedicated customer base. A true family business who are proud of everyone’s contribution they shout from the rooftops about the family in their business.

This business has tenacity, with a strong sense of family values, fairness and long term thinking – although young they show a great attitude and definitely one to watch.

Herdy has 60’000 social media followers the world over.

Herdy designs everything in-house. The company has four of its own shops and trades with over 300 retailers UK wide, plus Europe, Japan and the USA.

In 2010 herdy won Business In The Community’s Small Company of the Year for responsible business practice.

Cumbria’s green and pleasant land doesn’t perhaps highlight the hard working industries behind the scenes enough. Creating and making products Cumbria can be proud of, meet the finalists of the Manufacturing category of Cumbria Family Business Awards…

Lakeland Fells Furniture Ltd was established in 2004 to provide an organisational base from which the creative furniture design and manufacturing skill of Andrew Smith, then just 21, could be developed.
Established by Andrew and his parents, Bill & Lin, the company has developed its reputation and now services an ever increasing client base, from homeowners to commercial operators. A dedicated team in the workshop helps ensure that productivity is maintained and delivering the  quality expected by our clients.
Andrews skills have been recognised by the hospitality sector operators where his creative designs, and use of traditional and more contemporary cabinet making skills (and materials) has helped them achieve hard earned tourism presentation  awards.  The company is committed to helping provide local employment to those seeking to develop cabinet making skills, for many years providing opportunities for apprentices.  Andrew’s wife, Donna, manages the Special Spaces Showroom where examples of the creative diversity of the company can be viewed.

Lauren’s Cows is a mother, daughter partnership, based in the tiny village of Crackenthorpe in Cumbria, specialising in vibrant artwork and luxury items for the home all featuring wonderfully characterful Cows. Lauren is the daughter and artist, and mum, Jude, provides the brains of the outfit! The family business launched quite unexpectedly in October 2012, all beginning with a single painting of a cow.  One cow led to another, and another and Lauren’s Cows was born!
Since then we have put lived and breathed the business, honing our skills, collaborating with charities, travelling the country, facing the elements and all the while strengthening our brand and our relationship. Yes, we had to rope in brothers, fathers and husbands to create the thriving business that Lauren’s Cows is today, but what are families for?!  Everyone says that our Cows makes you smile, we know they make us smile every day!


MMA Ltd, trading as Twoey, an award winning manufacturer of Educational Resources, is a family business started in 1996 by a grandfather making things for his grandchildren and today employs some 30 people with three generations of the family involved. Twoey operates from a purpose built manufacturing site in Wigton  from where it supplies its customers across the whole of the UK and an increasing number of countries around the world.  It has three distinctive ranges: Twoey Inside, a range of Early Years role play products and furniture.
